Recently, a new client hired us to directional drill underground utilities on their project site.  It was the first time that they had subcontracted and worked with a directional drilling crew. After they learned of the flexibility and advantages of directional drilling the client saw an opportunity on their next project. Their next project included an 8” water main to be placed under a culvert. With the insights they gained from the first project, the client asked us to come up with a solution to avoid open cutting under a culver. The proposed horizontal directional drilling (HDD) design was presented to the engineer which eliminated a painful open cut. The open cut would have consisted of a 3 – 4-day job whereas the trenchless method was a one-day directional drill. We were also able to work within the Prime Contractor’s budget and most importantly, save time so their crew could go back to laying pipe.
